Cela fait deux fois que j’ai la chance de visiter Montréal. Une première fois, en mai 2013, et une deuxième en septembre 2014. Avec les beaux jours du printemps et de l’été la plus francophone des grandes villes nord-américaines déploie toute son énergie. Avec à la fois les grandes avenues et les gratte-ciels des villes américaines, mais aussi les terrasses de café et l’art de vivre des villes européennes, la métropole québécoise offre un beau compromis entre la culture anglophone et francophone. Voici mes 16 coups de coeur pour visiter Montréal.

Le parc du mont Royal

Avec 200ha, c’est le plus grand parc de la ville. On s’y croit vraiment en pleine nature, avec ses allées boisées et ses grandes pelouses. Il faut monter jusqu’au belvédère pour voir la vue panoramique sur Montréal (à pied, compter environ une heure, ou sinon prendre le bus N°11).

montreal-tam-tams-mont-royalLes dimanches après-midi, l’été, il ne faut pas louper les « tam-tams du mont Royal« , un rassemblement spontané d’artistes de rue qui jouent des percussions dans une ambiance très « peace and love ».

Le musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal

C’est sans hésitation le meilleur musée de Montréal. Immense, il compte deux édifices reliés par un souterrain, et présente un vaste panorama de l’art mondial. A ne pas manquer, le pavillon d’Art québécois et canadien, avec des oeuvres de l’art inuit jusqu’aux artistes contemporains comme Claude Tousignant et Jean-Paul Riopelle. La section Art contemporain international est très bien aussi, bien plus riche que le décevant Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) qui expose très peu d’oeuvres et dont la visite est pliée en 30 minutes… La collection sur le design est superbe aussi, avec beaucoup d’objets originaux et surprenants.

Le musée continue dehors d’ailleurs avec le jardin de sculptures qui présente des oeuvres de Dale Chihuly (Le soleil), Claude Cormier (Mirage - TOM III) ou encore Jim Dine (Coeurs jumeaux de six pieds).

Le piknic électronik

Alors ça, c’est un méga coup de coeur!! Tous les dimanches après-midi, de mi-mai à mi-septembre, c’est la grosse fiesta en plein coeur du parc Jean-Drapeau sur l’île Sainte-Hélène. La place de L’Homme, du nom de la sculpture de l’artiste Calder, se transforme en immense dance-floor avec des milliers de fêtards pour le piknic électronik. Une deuxième scène dans le parc offre une autre ambiance musicale pour ceux qui veulent changer. Atmosphère très festive et bon enfant. On peut même boire dans des buckets, comme pour la Full Moon party en Thaïlande! On a le droit d’amener son pique-nique, mais pas de boissons alcoolisées. Le concept du « piknic électronik » a d’ailleurs été importé à Barcelone… A quand un piknic électronik à Paris?

Avec Emily, bucket et cocktail au Piknic électronikL’hiver, c’est la même équipe qui organise l’Igloofest, un festival de musique électronique en plein air, entre janvier et février. Là, il y a intérêt à prévoir doudounes et bonnets pour danser dehors à une température qui peut atteindre -20 ou -30°C. J’adorerais essayer!!

La biosphère de Montréal

Egalement située dans le parc Jean-Drapeau, cette grosse boule de 63m de haut est l’ancien pavillon des Etats-Unis de l’Exposition Universelle de Montréal en 1967. Réalisée par l’architecte américain Buckminster Fuller, la biosphère est aussi un musée de l’environnement qu’on peut visiter.

La rue Sainte-Catherine

montreal-rue-sainte-catherineC’est une des principales rues commerçantes de Montréal. Sur la partie Est, entre la rue Atwater et la rue Saint-Hubert, c’est un peu comme la rue de Rivoli à Paris, avec les magasins des grandes enseignes internationales. Mais la partie que je préfère, c’est celle à l’Ouest, entre la rue Saint-Hubert et la rue Papineau, qui devient piétonne l’été avec des guirlandes roses suspendues. C’est en effet ici que se situe le quartier gay de Montréal, qu’on appelle aussi le Village. Plein de restaurants avec terrasses qui donnent envie de manger dehors et de profiter des beaux jours.

La ville souterraine

C’est un peu un fantasme quand on arrive à Montréal… On a forcément entendu parler de la ville souterraine et de ses kilomètres de tunnels qui permettent aux habitants de traverser la ville bien au chaud pendant l’hiver glacial. En fait c’est un peu abusif de parler d’une « ville », mais c’est vrai que le RESO, c’est son nom, est le plus grand réseau souterrain du monde, avec plus de 30km de galeries avec des magasins, des restos, des cinémas, le tout relié au métro. C’est aussi très pratique l’été quand il pleut et qu’on veut éviter de se faire mouiller, même si le RESO ne couvre en fait que le centre-ville et une partie du quartier des spectacles. Pas toujours évident de s’y orienter, mais on tombe des fois sur des galeries surprenantes…

Le jardin botanique

Ca n’est pas tellement mon genre de recommander d’aller dans un jardin botanique, mais celui de Montréal est vraiment top! C’est le 2e jardin botanique au monde après celui de Londres, avec une trentaine de jardins thématiques, sur 73ha. Il faut surtout essayer d’y aller pendant le festival la « Magie des lanternes« , pendant les mois de septembre et octobre, avec des illuminations nocturnes dans le jardin Chinois. J’y suis allée la journée, et c’était absolument magnifique. Je regrette de n’avoir pas eu l’occasion de revenir le soir…

Le Vieux-Port

Sur les bords du fleuve Saint-Laurent, le Vieux-Port permet de faire une ballade, que ce soit à pied ou à vélo, depuis l’usine désaffectée du silo n°5, jusqu’à la tour de l’Horloge, avec même une plage de sable blanc donnant sur le fleuve.

La muv box et ses lobster roll

montreal-homard-muv-boxLa muv box est un container sur le Vieux-Port transformé en « baraque à homard« ! On peut y manger du homard des îles de la Madeleine en sandwich ou en pizza. Une pause déjeuner très sympa!

La basilique Notre-Dame

montreal-basilique-notre-dameL’extérieur de cette basilique de style néogothique ne paie pas de mine, mais il faut absolument rentrer dedans, malgré le fait que l’entrée soit payante (5 dollars). L’intérieur est absolument sublime, avec des visites guidées toutes les demi-heures, à la fois en anglais et en français. Le décor en bois richement sculpté et la lumière bleutée sont impressionnants. C’est d’ailleurs là que Céline Dion s’est mariée avec rené Angelil!

La Brasserie T!

Située en plein coeur du quartier des spectacles, la Brasserie T! est la petite soeur du restaurant Toqué!, une des meilleures tables de Montréal. Le chef québécois Normand Laprise a ouvert la Brasserie T! pour proposer les grands classiques de la cuisine de bistrot à des prix plus abordables que chez Toqué!. On peut y manger du foie gras, un hamburger, ou encore du saumon confit ou de la coquille Saint-Jacques. Très belle vue sur les fontaines du quartier des spectacles en prime!

Le street-art sur le Plateau

Façade redessinée par Zilon sur le Plateau à MontréalLe Plateau, c’est un peu le quartier bobo de Montréal, branché, créatif et chic. Il s’articule le long de l’avenue du Mont-Royal, avec ses typiques maisons de ville avec des escaliers métalliques à l’extérieur. Au hasard des rues et des passages, on tombe sur plein de fresques de street-art, ou même cette maison entièrement redessinée par le street-artiste canadien Zilon, originaire de Montréal.

Tous les ans, au mois de juin, il y d’ailleurs un festival de street-art, le Festival Mural, avec des artistes qui dessinent des fresques dans la rue devant le public.

Square Victoria

montreal-square-victoriaCa c’est un peu la parisienne qui parle… Sur la place Victoria, nommé ainsi en l’honneur de la reine Victoria d’Angleterre, on peut voir une entrée du métro avec une authentique grille de métro parisien. Celle-ci a été donnée à la ville de Montréal par la ville de Paris lors de l’exposition universelle de 1967.

Le Massilia

montreal-massiliaC’est un petit coin de Marseille en face du parc Mont-Royal… Bienvenue au Massilia, un sympathique bar aux couleurs jaune et bleu d’un célèbre apéritif méridionnal, avec retransmission des matchs de l’OM, salle de billard, et même un terrain de pétanque! Accueil très sympa, et terrasse idéale pour prendre l’apéro!
