traverser canada trainAvec ses paysages grandioses, le Canada est une destination idéale à découvrir en train. D’autant plus qu’avec une superficie de 10 millions de km2, c’est le deuxième plus grand pays du monde, après la Russie. En deux voyages différents, j’ai traversé le pays dans toute sa largeur, de l’Océan Pacifique à l’Océan Atlantique. L’année dernière, c’était de Halifax à Toronto, avec une équipe de blogueurs internationaux, et cette année, de Vancouver à Montréal, en duo avec Emily. Un périple de plus de 6.000km au total, qui correspond à deux lignes majeures de Via-Rail, la SNCF canadienne:
Le Canadien (tracé en bleu ciel sur la carte), qui relie Vancouver à Toronto en 4 jours et 4.466km, en traversant les montagnes Rocheuses, les vastes plaines de l’Ouest et les lacs de l’Ontario.
L’Océan (tracé en bleu foncé), qui relie Montréal à Halifax en 20 heures et 1.346km, en bordure du Saint-Laurent et à travers le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Nouvelle-Ecosse.
Entre les deux, c’est un train classique qui relie Toronto à Montréal (539km en 6 heures), avec un crochet possible à Ottawa, la capitale du Canada. Sur cette carte ci-dessous, figurent l’ensemble des trajets que j’ai effectués en train au Canada, avec les étapes où je me suis arrêtée.

La vie à bord d’un train canadien
Voyager en train au Canada est une expérience à part entière. Il faut vouloir prendre son temps, adopter le rythme lent et berçant de la voie ferrée. En fonction de son budget, on peut choisir différents niveaux de conforts: sièges inclinables pour la classe Economie (à partir de 320 euros pour Vancouver-Toronto, repas non compris); couchettes et cabines pour une ou deux personnes en Première classe (à partir de 800 euros pour Vancouver-Toronto, 3 repas par jours inclus). Il y a même une voiture-lits Prestige, mais ça c’est vraiment du luxe! En partenariat avec Via-Rail, j’ai eu la chance de profiter de mes trajets en Première classe, et raconte ici cette expérience.
train canada cabine Les cabines doubles (avec lits superposés) sont équipées d’un lavabo et de WC. La douche est dans le couloir. Dans chaque wagon, un « préposé » est aux petits soins pour s’occuper des passagers et transformer les cabines équipées de sièges pour la journée en lits pour la nuit. L’anglais et le français sont les deux langues officielles à bord des trains canadiens, et la plupart des membres de l’équipage peuvent s’exprimer dans les deux langues. Consignes et menus sont bilingues.
train canada wagon restaurant La vie à bord est rythmée par les repas servis dans la voiture restaurant. Trois fois par jour, c’est le rituel du préposé qui passe à travers les wagons pour annoncer l’appel aux repas. A bord, on parle le « français québécois », donc le « petit-déjeuner » c’est le « déjeuner », le « déjeuner » c’est le « dîner », et le « dîner », c’est le « souper »… Le dimanche, on a même le droit de faire la grasse matinée, en choisissant l’option « brunch ».
canada train manger restaurantPour s’occuper la journée, beaucoup d’activités sont organisées à bord du train. Dans les voitures « animation », on peut assister à des projections de documentaires sur le Canada, jouer à des jeux de société, lire les revues à disposition, ou en profiter pour rencontrer ses compagnons de voyage. C’est un voyage assez cher, alors la moyenne d’âge est plutôt élevée… Mais il y a aussi quelques jeunes tout de même. L’après-midi, des dégustations de bières et vins canadiens sont organisées! Idéal pour profiter d’un apéro avant l’heure du souper! Sinon, toute la journée, il y a thé, café et petits gâteaux à volonté dans la voiture dôme à l’arrière, où on peut en plus profiter encore mieux du paysage.

J’ai traversé le Canada d’un océan à l’autre en deux voyages différents, d’un mois chacun. Je détaille ici les étapes que j’ai effectuées, avec les moments marquants de la traversée.
De Vancouver à Jasper
19h de trajet, avec une nuit dans le train – C’est la partie la plus scénique de la traversée du Canada avec le passage à travers les majestueuses montagnes Rocheuses et ses lacs bleu azur. Sur cette partie, le train compte d’ailleurs un wagon spécial en plus: la voiture panorama, entièrement vitrée pour pouvoir profiter encore mieux des paysages traversés.

Faire étape à Jasper pour découvrir les montagnes Rocheuses et ses parcs nationaux, le parc national de Jasper, et le parc national de Banff, faire du trekking sur les glaciers ou randonner au bord des lacs. Le meilleur moyen pour profiter des sites est de louer une voiture. Avec Emily, nous avons fait un road-trip d’une semaine de Jasper jusqu’à Banff, avec retour à Jasper pour reprendre le train.
De Jasper à Winnipeg
26h de trajet avec une nuit dans le train – Changement radical de paysage… Après les montagnes Rocheuses, place aux grandes prairies du centre du Canada.
On peut s’arrêter à Winnipeg pour découvrir la capitale du Manitoba, avec notamment son tout nouveau musée des Droits de l’Homme. Pour observer des aurores boréales, des baleines ou des ours blancs dans leur habitat naturel, il faut alors compter plusieurs jours pour aller au Nord jusqu’à Churchill. Pour une excursion nature pas loin de Winnipeg, on peut aller au marais Oak Hammock, un lieu d’observation réputé pour voir des oiseaux migrateurs et faire des balades en canoë.
De Winnipeg à Toronto
33h de trajet avec deux nuits dans le train – Après les grandes étendues herbeuses du Manitoba, la voie ferrée longe les grands lacs de l’Ontario. C’est la plus longue partie du trajet et on a vraiment le temps de profiter de la vie à bord.
Toronto est une ville passionnante à ne pas manquer avec sa belle skyline et la CN Tower. Prévoir au minimum trois jours pour la découvrir, et un jour de plus pour faire un crochet jusqu’aux chutes du Niagara.

De Toronto à Montréal
6h de trajet – Pour rallier les deux plus grandes villes du Canada, c’est une ligne de train classique, de jour. On peut aussi faire un crochet par la capitale, Ottawa, intéressante à découvrir également. Avantage non négligeable: de Toronto à Montréal, il y a du wifi gratuit à bord du train!
Comme Toronto, Montréal vaut une étape de plusieurs jours… Tous mes coups de coeur à lire ici. L’idéal est de pouvoir caler son séjour à Montréal lors d’un des nombreux festivals qui animent la métropole québécoise, comme les Francofolies au printemps, le Piknic Electronik l’été ou l’Igloofest en hiver.
De Montréal à Moncton
18h de trajet avec une nuit dans le train – L’Océan longe le fleuve Saint-Laurent sur la première partie du parcours, mais c’est pendant la nuit… Le lendemain, place aux paysages maritimes du Nouveau-Brunswick. A bord, on a droit à des conférences sur la pêche aux homards ou la culture acadienne.
A Moncton, il ne faut pas oublier bien sûr de manger du homard, qui prolifère en abondance dans les eaux des provinces maritimes, et aussi aller jusqu’à la baie de Fundy, pour observer les plus hautes marées du monde à Hopewell Rocks. J’y étais l’année dernière avec mon amie Adeline qui raconte ça ici.
De Moncton à Halifax
4h de trajet – C’est la dernière portion de trajet ferroviaire avant de rallier Halifax, à l’extrême Est du pays-continent, sur les bords de l’Océan Atlantique. Tout comme Vancouver, Halifax est une ville maritime, mais avec une ambiance complètement différente, moins moderne et plus mystérieuse, marquée par la tragédie du Titanic qui a sombré au large d’Halifax.
Infos pratiques à savoir:
-Dans les trains longue distance, comme le Canadien et l’Océan, il faut enregistrer ses bagages avant le départ (comme en avion). Il faut donc arriver suffisamment à l’avance, et surtout prévoir un bagage à main pour avoir quelques vêtements de rechange, ses affaires de toilette et de quoi s’occuper à bord.
-Les cabines ferment à clé de l’intérieur, mais pas de l’extérieur… Mais à priori les trains canadiens sont parmi les plus sûrs du monde.
-Les trains sont entièrement non-fumeurs; il faut donc profiter des arrêts en gare pour sortir fumer une cigarette sur le quai.
