Evidemment, ce qui frappe dès le début, dès l’arrivée à l’aéroport de Montréal, c’est l’utilisation conjointe du Français et de l’Anglais dans les panneaux, les affiches, et dans les discussions. Le douanier, le chauffeur de taxi, la réceptionniste de l’hôtel ont commencés à parler en anglais, mais sont passés au français dès que je leur ais dit “Bonjour !”.
Ensuite une simple balade dans la rue permet de confirmer la 1ère impression : Montréal est une ville bilingue. L’anglais et le français se côtoient, s’alternent, et se mêlent parfois même au sein des conversations. J’ai ainsi entendu des personnes parler en français à d’autres qui répondaient en anglais, et chacun semblait parfaitement comprendre ce que l’autre disait ! Certains passent même de l’anglais au français dans leur conversation, au grès de leur envie et de leur inspiration. C’est assez rare mais cela m’a surpris de le constater.
J’ai eu l’occasion de discuter avec quelqu’un qui pratiquait cela, et il m’expliqua que c’est parce que chaque langue permet d’exprimer certaines notions mieux que dans l’autre. Même si je suis loin d’être bilingue, je maitrise à présent suffisamment l’anglais pour penser parfois dans cette langue et je ne peux qu’être d’accord avec lui : maitriser suffisamment une nouvelle langue pour penser avec elle est comme d’acquérir un nouvel oeil pour observer le monde. Et s’exprimer avec elle est également une façon différente de s’exprimer sur le monde et d’agir.
Je me rappelle avoir rencontré il y a quelques années une jeune femme passionnée de langues, et elle me disait que ce qui la passionnait le plus dans les langues, c’était les mots qui étaient propres à elles et intraduisibles dans d’autres : cela était un lien direct avec la manière dont cette langue était reliée à la réalité. Chaque langue a un rapport à la réalité différent, en relation directe avec l’histoire de son peuple, et perçoit également des choses qui ne sont pas perçues par d’autres.
Bref, apprendre une nouvelle langue jusqu’à la maitriser suffisamment pour penser avec ouvre notre esprit de manière incroyable. Malheureusement, la majorité des personnes ne maitrisent que leur langue natale et c’est une découverte qu’elles ne feront jamais de toute leur vie.
Pour ma part, après avoir bien amélioré ma maitrise de l’anglais, mon prochain objectif est de développer mon espagnol embryonnaire, éventuellement en allant vivre en Espagne ou dans un autre pays hispanophone. L’Amérique du Sud me semble bien tentante, même si je suis amoureux de Barcelone ! :)
Je n’ai quasiment pas rencontré d’employé de restaurant ou d’hôtel qui ne parlait pas français, même s’ils commençaient presque toujours par parler avec moi en anglais. Des exceptions toutefois dans la partie anglophone de Montréal, avec quelques employés qui s’efforçaient de parler en français quand je le faisais, mais avec beaucoup de difficultés. A Québec, c’est l’inverse, dans les restaurants les employés m’ont toujours parlé en français directement.
Au delà des conversations, quasiment tous les affichages à Montréal sont toutefois en français, avec parfois la traduction en anglais en dessous, résultat d’une loi qui protège sévèrement l’usage du français au Québec.
